In the PICU

Well, we certainly didn't think Julianne would be in the PICU a week after getting home from Boston, but here we are. Here's what happened:

Late Wednesday afternoon - woke up from nap with a low grade fever and a red splotchy face and ears. Called local ped after hours and they felt it seemed like a Bactrim reaction but didn't want to tell us to stop it without Boston approval. Called 8 East and they said stop the Bactrim and see the pediatrician in the morning.

Thursday - went to local ped office and they felt it was indeed a Bactrim reaction. Told us to contact Dr. B in Boston for new RX. Emailed back and forth with Dr. B and sent pics of new dark red spots on back of her legs. He called in new RX and told me to watch for any changes in rash.

Today - Julianne woke up with a big black spot on her lip and red dots all over body (petechia). Emailed a pic and brought her in again. By the time we got to the dr. office tiny "bruises" started appearing (pupura). They didn't like how she looked at all and sent Julianne to the hospital. The spots continued to get worse and we spent the day with Julianne being poked and poked and poked for blood and failed IV attempts. They were finally able to get labs and found out Julianne's platelets were around 8,000 when they should be around 300,000...so really low! Her WBC were also low too. So, they got an EJ line in, but lost it before the platelets could even be given. Then put in another EJ, gave her platelets then put in a central line. Now we are just going to be waiting as they check labs frequently and try to figure out what's going on. It seems that the likely source is a Bactrim reaction, but it could also be viral, infection or Steven Johnson syndrome (brought on by Bactrim). She's being watched closely.

We really appreciate your prayers. It was a tough day for everybody but we are relieved that they're being so cautious. We thank God for protecting our baby girl and are praying for a much easier day tomorrow!

Oh, Mrs. Jessica, I'm sorry to learn that y'all are back in PICU! The Texas contingent of the Julianne Prayer Warriors will pray that our gracious heavenly Father will send physical healing for this precious little girl. Time and again, our hearts go out to y'all as you work through this season of hard Providence. The men and women who founded this country wrote in their founding documents that all men are created equal in the eyes of God…clearly did not have in mind that we are not equal in terms of our daily allotment of suffering! May God bless you and Kent as you witness firsthand God's sovereign grace and mercy where Julianne is concerned.

I am so sorry to hear that Julianne is having to go through this especially after just returning from Boston. I can only imagine how difficult it is as her parents to watch her suffer as they try to get a line into her and that you can only do so much. I am praying that the doctors figure this all out soon and get her back on track. Also praying for strength for you and Kent in knowing that God is constantly there with her.
I love you all.
God Bless you,
Aunt/Great Suzette

Dear Jessica and Kent,
I'm praying for quick answers, healing and peace for her. For you two I know how hard it is to watch your baby suffer and feel so helpless. She is blessed to have such faithful parents as you. May God grant you all serenity. I will be thinking and praying for you all throughout this new trial. My heart breaks for you.
I love you all very much.

I am so sorry that Julianne is going through this. If it is Bactrim my neighbor had it two years ago. It was rough on an adult.
Know that we are keeping Julianne and her, staff, in our prayers.
Love to all. Karen
